Role of Pain in Hair Transplant

Hair loss is one of the most common problems faced by men and women nowadays. The reason
for this can be genetics, pollution, changing lifestyle, high-stress levels, diet, etc. Generally, hair
re-growth in men has a lesser possibility compared to that of women. Many different hair loss
treatments and medications are available nowadays that assure hair re-growth. However, men
or women suffering from pattern baldness can’t be treated by medications. Thus, for those who
suffer from acute hair loss problems or those who have not benefitted from other hair loss
treatments, hair transplantation comes as the only option.

Hair transplantation, as is well known, is a cosmetic surgery which helps a person to regain their
lost hair. It is carried on by extracting hair follicles from the donor area of the head to the area
of the head which is almost or completely bald (recipient area). Hair transplant can only be
done for people who still have natural hair growth at some parts of the head. People who are
almost or completely bald can’t go for a hair transplant.

Talking about hair transplant, the first thing that comes to one’s mind is whether it is safe? The
answer to this is that hair transplant surgery is considered to be one of the safest and most
promising surgeries. Another most commonly asked question is: Is hair transplant painful? The
answer to this is that hair transplant is one of the least painful surgeries. However, it is a
surgery and is obviously accompanied by pain. To get a clear picture of the amount of pain
accompanied by hair transplant it is recommended to understand the procedure involved in
hair transplant.

Hair transplant procedure

Hair transplant is usually carried on through two approaches i.e. FUT and FUE. Which procedure
to choose depends upon the patient’s choice and willingness.

FUT (follicular unit transplant) also known as slit grafting technique is carried out by extracting a
strip of scalp skin. Each strip consists of 5-10 hair follicles depending upon the volume of hair at
the donor site. The strip is then cut into individual hair grafts and transplanted at the recipient
site. To carry on this technique, a surgeon has to give a long incision at the donor site which
needs to be stitched back after extraction. The incision leaves behind a scar at the donor site
which is considerably visible even after months of surgery and recovery.

The FUE (follicular unit extraction), on the other hand, is carried out by extracting individual
hair follicles using a large punch. The extracted hair follicles are then implanted on the recipient
site. FUE technique doesn’t require any incision and thus leaves behind no scar. However, tiny
holes are visible at the donor site.

FUT involves a long incision which may be the cause of pain. In general, FUT is considered to be
more painful as compared to the FUE technique. FUE technique is the minimally invasive
approach of hair transplant. No incision is involved in FUE and thus, the pain factor minimizes.
As a matter of fact, FUE has a quicker recovery compared to FUT. However, the hair transplant
cost for FUT is lesser than that of FUE.

Local anesthesia is given at the time of surgery to minimize pain. Local anesthesia numbs the
donor and the recipient areas for about 10 hours. As the patient is not under the effect of
general anesthesia, he/she can see how the procedure is being carried out. This may cause a
feeling of being uncomfortable rather than pain in the patient.

Thus, it can be concluded that during the surgery there is no exact pain as the donor and the
recipient areas are under the effect of local anesthesia. However, a patient may feel
uncomfortable as he/she sees how the surgery is carried out.

Pain after the surgery

As hair transplant is a surgery, hair transplant side effects do exist. The major risks involved are
pain, swelling, redness, and irritation. However, all these side effects are temporary and do not
last long. Pain can easily be tackled through mild pain killers.
