Hair transplant is the recent trend now! However, hair transplant has been performed by numerous doctors since 1950’s and the technique has undergone numerous evolutions by now. A Hair transplant is such a surgical hair restoration procedure that uses hair follicles from the sides and back of the scalp to the balding or hair thinning areas. More and more people are now selecting to undergo such a procedure because of its natural appearing results and also because it is performed on an out-patient basis and the recovery period involved is also short.

The hair transplantation procedure can be performed by following two techniques-

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) and Follicular unit transplant (FUT).

In the FUT hair transplant procedure, the surgeon removes 6 to 10-inch strips from the back of the head (donor area) which is sutured up and left for healing.

However, the donor area becomes immediately hidden with the long hairs present around it. Then these extracted grafts are segregated into the strip implants on the recipient area very carefully.

The procedure is helpful for covering up large balding areas. FUT hair transplant procedure is most effective in treating baldness or hair thinning issues in small areas.

Whereas in the FUE hair transplant procedure, the surgeon first shaves the back and sides of the scalp and then collects the hair follicles one by one with absolute precision.

The area, however, heals leaving behind small dots which will not be visible. These hair follicles are again transplanted in the required transplanted area. The procedure usually takes 4 to 8 hours to complete the procedure.

The time required for the completion of the procedure depends on the number of grafts to be transplanted and the extent of the area to be covered.

Recovery period:

Immediately after undergoing the procedure, the scalp is probably covered up with a bandage and at this time the patients do not usually experience much pain due to the effect of anesthesia.

When the anesthesia effect wears off, the patients are instructed to take medications for pain for several days. The patients are prescribed to wear bandages over the scalp for at least a day or two after undergoing the procedure.

Patients are also instructed to take medications like antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs for several days to avoid the chances of any infection. Most of the people are able to resume normal activities within 2 to 5 days of undergoing the procedure.

Even though the recovery period may vary from person to person, but for majority people, the hair growth is observed within 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.

In this time the transplanted hair may fall out and the patients must notice new hair growth within few months. Often people may also experience normal hair to fall out which is called shock loss that occurs due to the trauma caused to the scalp.

Most of the transplanted hair is found to grow within 6 to 9 months after undergoing the procedure. Some surgeons may also provide medications like minoxidil or Rogaine to improve the hair growth after transplantation.

When can patients be able to resume exercises or workout?

Working out and exercising is an integral part of life which is responsible for boosting up the energy and health. After undergoing the procedure, the surgeon usually provides with some post-op instructions that includes avoiding strenuous activities like exercising, swimming for about few weeks after undergoing the procedure.

So following the instructions provided by the surgeon is very important for rapid and safe healing but physical activities are also equally important.

According to the surgeons, it is important to abstain from strenuous activities after undergoing a hair transplant procedure to facilitate a safe healing of the hair follicles that in turn decreases the possibility of excessive bleeding or trauma caused to the scalp that may dislodge the newly transplanted hair.

Increase in the activity level will also result in an increased heart rate that will raise the blood pressure which can cause an increased chance of recipient bleeding and dislodgement of the hair follicles.

Therefore patients must mandatorily refrain from heavy exercising for about two weeks after undergoing a hair transplant procedure. Light activities, brisk walk, yoga may be resumed after few days of undergoing the procedure.
