The hair loss issue has been faced by people for a really long time, but techniques of transplanting hair are modern. While in the 18th century the first successful hair transplant procedure was conducted in the 1890s, the modern methods were established in the 1930s.
During the 1960s, there was an increase in the amount of hair transplant procedure.
Nowadays, a hair transplant is rarely considered a major surgery, therefore, a growing number of people are opting for it, to ensure they have their head full of hair back.
There are several reasons why people are choosing hair transplant and just some of them include:
• The results are usually permanent because even though a few transplanted hair may fall off, the rest of the hair will replace it. • Your transplanted hair will look as normal and natural hair as it were before. • There is a less need to worry as your own hair will be used for the procedure, there is little you have to worry about. • Transplanted hair can be treated just like your normal hair, which means you can cut, colour and style your hair the way you like. • It is a great solution for baldness
Types of Hair transplant surgery
Hair transplantation procedure is carried out by removing grafts/follicles from the back of the head. These hair are usually more resistant to hormonal changes and are used to place them in areas of scanty growth or baldness.
There are two methods to remove the grafts –
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).
What is FUT Hair Transplant?
FUT Hair Transplant
Follicular unit transplant or FUT is also popular as strip surgery. FUT is one of the most often used hair transplant procedures for treatment of hair fall. It is an ideal choice for people, who have a large area which is bald.
During this procedure, the hair-bearing skin is removed by using an instrument called scalpel from the back of a person’s head and the gap at the back of the person’s head is stitched together.
The strip is then divided in grafts consisting of one or two follicles and then implanted in the same way as FUE.
FUT or strip Hair Transplant Procedure
A lot of information is available on the internet about FUT & FUE but when it comes to the procedure, there is less awareness about the procedure.
In FUT, an entire strip of hair is taken out from the scalp’s donor area. Post that dissection takes place under a microscope. The area from where the strip is removed is stitched back carefully, which leaves a linear scar on the scalp.
The intention of a follicular unit transplantation is to pluck hair from a donor area and transplant it into the area where there is more visible balding. Normally, small follicular units are transferred, and each unit contains anywhere from a single to four hairs.
Advantages of FUT method
Large bald areas are easily covered in fewer sittings.
The resection rate (the grafts that get cut whilst removing) may fail to provide superior results. However, the resection rate depends on the skill of the cosmetic surgeon and their staff.
Today, there are several types of transplantation methods, but the most popular of them all happens to be FUE.
In this stage of extreme technological advancement, there are several types of hair transplantation methods, but the most popular of them all happens to be FUE.
FUE or follicular unit extraction is one of the most recent and advanced methods of hair transplantation available, it can assure you positive results which appear completely natural.
Unlike FUT or follicular unit transplantation, FUE result wise is a far more sophisticated method, which is why there are very few cosmetic centres around the world, offering the same.
In FUT, a strip of the scalp is removed from the donor site and hair grafts are harvested from the same. The area from where the strip was removed is then sutured back and this leaves a linear scar.
However, with FUE, incisions are not required, which means that there are also no stitches or scars. Via a suction-like instrument, individual grafts are removed and immediately placed into the recipient site or the bald area of the patients head.
FUE Hair Transplant Procedure
Here is a more in-depth look at how an FUE procedure is done:
The donor site and the recipient (bald area) sites are marked beforehand. In case the donor site on the scalp will not already have sufficient grafts, hair grafts from other parts of the body, such as beard, chest and legs can also be utilized.
The hair follicles or grafts are then extracted one by one from the donor site. The hair follicles or grafts are then implanted immediately into the recipient site.
The hair transplant procedure is minimally invasive and leaves behind no scars, especially when done by a hair transplant expert. In addition, the healing time is not much and people are able to return to their normal lives within no time.
Advantages of FUE method
This type of hair transplant procedure does not involve taking an entire strip of scalp from the back of the head like in strip surgery, there are no cuts or stitches.
The recovery time is much quicker. It is so quick that the patient often returns to work the next day itself. There is no linear scar.
Both FUR & FUT methods involve hair transplant surgery hence a proper consultation with the cosmetic surgeon is required who can explain the procedure and its advantages and disadvantages.
It takes several hours to perform the hair transplant surgery and hair implant hence it is important to skip the day out completely from work and be mentally prepared for it.
Most cosmetic surgeons will want to shave your entire head before going ahead with the procedure to make sure that you factor that in. Also, read if non-surgical methods can reverse hair loss.
Hair regrowth treatment is not possible for everyone hence hair transplant is required. Hair transplantation procedure involves taking out a small patch of grafts from the hair-bearing scalp or a dense piece of the scalp from a donor area and dividing this into smaller pieces to use as grafts.
These hair grafts are then moved to a bald or thinning area of the scalp to cover up. The hair grafts created in this manner often differ in shape and size. circle-shaped grafts usually contain about 10-15 hair.
The much tiny mini-graft contains between two to four hair, and the micro-graft contains one to two hair. The Slit grafts, which are inserted into slits created in the scalp, contain up to 10 hair each; strip grafts are longer and thinner and often contain up to 40 hair.
More than one hair surgical sessions may be required to achieve desired fully dense hair, and a healing period of several months is necessary between each session. It may take up to two years before you see the end result with a full transplant course.
The amount of hair transplant you’ll need is mostly dependent upon the colour and texture of your present hair.
Coarse, grey or light-coloured hair result in better coverage than fine, dark-coloured hair. The number of hair grafts transplanted in the first session varies from one individual to another, but the average is about 50.
For mini- hair grafts or micro- hair grafts, the number can go up to 700 hair grafts per session.
Just before hair transplant surgery, the “donor area” is cut short so that the hair grafts can be easily located and removed.
For punch hair grafts, your cosmetic surgeon may use a special tube-like carbon steel made instrument that is used to punch the round hair graft out of the donor area so it can be shifted to the area that needs to be covered. In the majority of the hair transplant surgery cases, it’s the frontal hairline that needs help.
For other types of hair grafts, your cosmetic surgeon will utilize a scalpel to extract small sections of hair-bearing scalp, which will be further divided into tiny sections and transplanted into tiny holes or slits within the scalp.
When hair grafts are taken, your cosmetic surgeon may timely inject smaller amounts of saline solution into the scalp to retain proper skin strength. The donor site holes may be sealed with stitches.
If a hair fall treatment surgery requires a punch graft, a single stitch can close each punch site. For other types of hair grafts, a tiny, straight-line scar will be present at the end result. The stitches are usually concealed with the surrounding hair.
Hair transplant treatment requires a cosmetic surgeon to maintain a healthy blood circulation in the scalp, the hair grafts are placed about one-eighth of an inch from other hair graft.
During the later sessions, the spaces between the hair will be filled in with additional grafts. Your cosmetic surgeon will take great care of the hair loss clinic in removing and placing the hair grafts to ensure that the transplanted hair should grow in a natural direction. Hair transplant surgery is done in a way that the hair growth at the donor site is not adversely affected.
Post the hair grafting session is complete, the scalp is well cleaned and covered with gauze. You may be required to wear a pressure bandage for initial two days post surgery. Some hair treatment surgeons may allow their patients to recover bandage-free.
